Day 1

Scriptures: Genesis 2:7, Job 33:4, Psalms 33:6

Sometimes, life can feel like too much—restlessness, rushing, and overwhelming schedules. In those chaotic moments, it’s hard to catch your breath.

I had asthma when I was young, and one of my sons faces similar challenges. When breathing becomes difficult, we’re taught to breathe deeper—to slow each inhale and extend each exhale intentionally, often inhaling medication at the same time. I’ve heard similar breathing techniques to calm anxiety, which is why the concept of breath prayer felt natural to me when I first came across it.

Breath prayer is a centuries-old Christian tradition.

It combines the rhythm of your breathing with short intentional prayers, helping you connect with God with your whole self.

The practice is wonderfully simple: repeat two short phrases, one with each inhale and exhale, allowing your prayer to become as natural as breathing.

I treasure how these prayers slow my racing heart, focus my attention when I’m pulled in multiple directions, and remind me of God’s constant presence even in stressful moments. Throughout this plan, I’ll share a breath prayer for each day.

Breath itself is tied to God in a beautiful way. In Genesis, God forms humanity from dust, His own exhale giving us life. Each breath you take while parenting is a reminder of your dependence on Him—whether you’re making lunches, mediating sibling conflicts, or collapsing into bed after a long day.

Even God’s name, Yahweh, connects to breath. Many theologians note how inhaling and exhaling echo the syllables of His name—Yah (inhale) and Weh (exhale).

Personally, I think it’s easier to hear when I’m hurrying. Jog for a few seconds, or hustle to look for something. Then take a few breaths.

Can you hear how His name resonates in your breath?

This awareness can ground you during challenging (or tiring) moments.

As you move through today, practice this mindful breathing when you feel overwhelmed. Let your breath become a prayer as you whisper His name in the carpool line, while preparing dinner, or during that precious moment of quiet at the end of the day.

You don’t need elaborate words or perfect focus—God knows life leaves little room for either. Just pause briefly and notice your breath. As you breathe, remember you’re calling on God with each inhale and exhale. This seemingly small act—drawing air in and out—is because God has given you life.

Whisper His name as you breathe:

Inhale: Yah
Exhale: Weh

If words feel too much, just focus on your breathing, knowing that even the rhythm of your breath calls out to Him.

Do this a few times, letting each breath grow deeper. With each inhale, invite Him into your journey. Let this simple one-word prayer remind you of God’s closeness. With each inhale, invite Him closer. With each exhale, release your burdens into His care.

God is near, as close as your next breath, delighting in your presence and your desire to connect with Him.

Hey Parents: Use this section each day to share this topic with your kids.

Kid Connection: Wonder Together

“Did you know that our breathing can help us remember God? When we breathe in and out, it sounds like God’s special name—Yahweh. Let’s try it together for three breaths and see if you can hear it.”

Tomorrow, we’ll discover how Jesus offers exactly what we need when we’re overwhelmed and at the end of our strength.

Day 2

Scriptures: Mark 10:46-52, Psalms 86:5, Hebrews 4:16

Life can feel so heavy sometimes, can’t it?

Maybe you’re facing challenges that seem impossible, decisions about your family that feel overwhelming, or the relentless pace of your day-to-day life is wearing you down. When the weight feels too much, it’s easy to believe you need to keep pushing through—relying on your own strength to make it all work. But what if you don’t have to?

Breath prayer offers a simple way to turn toward God in those moments when you’re at your limit. At its core, this prayer is about simplicity, not perfection or length.

One of the most well-known breath prayers comes from Mark 10, where we find the story of Bartimaeus, a blind man crying out to Jesus as He passes by. His words are both desperate and faith-filled:

“Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Mark 10:47 ESV)

In his desperation, Bartimaeus captures something profound. He doesn’t offer a long, polished prayer. He simply cries out for mercy from the One he knows can save him. And Jesus heals his sight.

This prayer has often been called “The Jesus Prayer” or “the prayer of the heart” and dates all the way back to the 3rd or 4th centuries.

It’s shortened even further to a breath prayer of just two words: Jesus. Mercy.

These words simplify the cry of our hearts, even when we don’t have the breath—or the energy—for anything more.

Wherever you feel stretched thin, overwhelmed, or like you’ve reached your limit, God’s strength can meet you there. His mercy fills the gaps when your abilities or resources end, but your needs keep on going. When you feel like you don’t have enough patience, wisdom, or energy—He is more than enough.

Take a moment to consider:

  • Where am I trying to rely on my own abilities?
  • What weight am I carrying that I need to hand over to God?
  • How can I rest in God’s mercy and strength today?

Pause for breath, letting this prayer anchor your heart in God’s truth.

As you breathe, picture yourself calling on Him with your most pressing needs. Whisper this prayer or speak it silently in your heart:

Inhale: Jesus
Exhale: Mercy

As you pray, imagine God meeting you with mercy and strength in each breath, filling the places where you feel empty or overwhelmed.

You don’t have to figure it all out.

You don’t have to navigate things alone.

God’s grace is sufficient, His mercy is endless, and His strength will carry you through.

Kid Connection: Let’s Talk About It

“Jesus loves to help us, and we can ask Him for help wherever we need it. Our prayers don’t have to be long or fancy. We can just talk to Him. What’s something you need Jesus’ help with today?” Pray with your child as either you or they, share that need with God.

Tomorrow, we’ll explore how God guides us through life’s toughest decisions and carries us when we don’t know which way to turn.

Day 3

Scriptures: Psalms 23:1-3, John 10:14, Psalms 143:8

Are you feeling the weight of big family decisions, stressed about making the “right” choice, or afraid of missing God’s plan?

Psalm 23 is one of the most comforting and soul-settling passages in the Bible. It invites you into God’s tender care as your Shepherd, someone who knows you personally, leads you faithfully, and provides for you fully. Today, let’s begin with just the first verse:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need” (Psalm 23:1, NLT)

Take a deep breath and let those words sink in.

The Lord is your shepherd. Not just a shepherd for the whole world—though that’s true—but yours. He knows your heart, your questions, and your fears. Shepherds don’t lead from afar; they stay close, providing protection and care.

You have all that you need. I know how hard this can be to believe sometimes. Maybe you’re in a season of uncertainty or waiting, where it feels like God’s provision isn’t enough. Maybe you feel nervous about big decisions or changes affecting your family. God’s Word reminds us He always gives what is good. His care doesn’t mean you’ll never have wants or challenges—it means you’re never without His presence, peace, or guidance.

Dallas Willard said, “The Lord is my shepherd—that is relationship. I shall not want—that is provision.” Let that sink in. God’s shepherding care meets your needs—not just material needs, but your need for wisdom, guidance, and peace.

Notice that Psalm 23 doesn’t say you must find the right path. It says the Lord your Shepherd leads you, guides you, and refreshes you, even making you lie down to rest in good places.

For someone like me—a recovering perfectionist—this truth is life-giving. God’s guidance frees me from the pressure to make perfect choices.

What if the “right path” isn’t about a perfect choice, but about walking closely with Him?

Take a moment to ask:

  • Lord, where am I putting too much pressure on myself?
  • How can I trust You with this decision instead of trying to control it?

When you feel the weight of choices, remember: God’s leadership is steady, His paths are good, and you don’t walk them alone.

Breathe deeply and intentionally as you pray either (or both) of the breath prayers below.

Inhale: The Lord is my shepherd
Exhale: I have all that I need

Inhale: The Lord my shepherd
Exhale: Leads me in right paths

Picture God gently guiding you—not to make you prove anything, but to invite you into His peace and provision. With each breath, release the stress of trying to control everything. Let your questions become conversations with God.

Because He is your Shepherd, you truly have all that you need.

Kid Connection: Try This

Look for things—outside, or in your home—that remind you of how shepherds take care of sheep (soft grass, water, safe places). Ask your child, “How do you think God takes care of us like a shepherd?” If helpful, look around your home for reminders of that too. Share one way you’ve seen God care for your family lately.

Discover how God brings peace that calms our hearts and relieves anxiety. That’s where we’re going next.

Day 4

Scriptures: Philippians 4:7, Isaiah 26:3, John 14:27

Life can feel overwhelming—school schedules, work deadlines, family obligations, and expectations pulling you in every direction.

It’s easy to get caught in the rush, always chasing something just out of reach. When everything speeds up, peace seems impossible to find. But no matter how chaotic life becomes, one thing remains unshaken: God’s peace.

We often think peace is something we have to search for, something we must earn, or something that will appear when our circumstances are just right. But God’s peace is already here. He’s waiting to surround you and calm your restless heart—if you’ll let Him.

Peace isn’t the absence of problems; it’s the presence of God right in the middle of them.

When your mind races with worry about your children, when your heart feels heavy, and when you’re stretched too thin between everyone’s needs, God’s peace is what you need most. His peace doesn’t depend on your circumstances, but on His constant presence.

When you pause to breathe and invite Him into your day, you allow His peace to settle deep within you. It’s not something you have to earn or create—it’s something you receive.

Take a moment to reflect:

  • What would God’s peace feel like in your current circumstances?
  • What worries or anxieties are stressing you out?

You don’t need a perfect moment—just a moment to pause and surrender.

Breathe in the peace He freely offers, and breathe out the tension that tries to steal it away.

With your next breath, pray:

Inhale: I receive Your peace
Exhale: To guard my heart and mind

Repeat these words with each breath. Let His peace fill you, knowing that your Prince of Peace is with you, ready to calm your heart and guide your family.

Kid Connection: Ask This

“When do you feel peaceful? What helps you feel calm when something worries you?” After they answer, share what helps you feel peaceful too. You might say, “I feel God’s peace when we pray together before bed,” or “Taking deep breaths helps me remember God is with us.”

Experience how God’s love fills the empty places where we feel unseen, forgotten, or not enough. Get ready for tomorrow…

Day 5

Scriptures: Romans 8:35-39, Jeremiah 31:3, Ephesians 3:19-20

Do you ever feel unseen in the middle of your busy life?

Like no one truly gets what you’re going through, or worse, that God might be distant from your struggles? Maybe you’re carrying unspoken hurts—broken relationships, criticism from others, or disappointment in yourself. It’s hard to face those deep aches, and sometimes, it feels like no one understands.

I know this feeling all too well. There have been seasons in my life where I felt forgotten and misunderstood. I’ve wrestled with feelings of loneliness after friendships changed. I’ve struggled with self-doubt after harsh words from others.

But through it all, I’ve learned one powerful truth: Even when you feel unseen, God’s love for you is unchanging and ever-present.

When we’re hurting, we often feel as if no one notices—especially God. Yet His love doesn’t depend on our circumstances or our worthiness. It’s constant, tender, and real. His love is near, as close as your next breath. God sees you—not from a distance, but from a place of intimate care. In your loneliness, in your weariness, in your doubt, He is present.

I remember struggling with deep feelings of rejection while starting a new chapter in my life. I was overwhelmed, questioning whether I was truly seen, and unsure if I could move forward. During that time, I felt God gently whisper to my heart, “You’re not alone. I see you. I know your heart. And I love you.” It wasn’t a loud, dramatic declaration—just His quiet, consistent presence reminding me I wasn’t forgotten.

God’s love isn’t abstract—it’s deeply personal.

He meets you where you are with tenderness and understanding. His heart for you speaks: “I see you. You are valued. You belong.”

Today, if you feel invisible or disconnected, take a moment to pause and let God meet you there.

You don’t need to hide or pretend. Bring Him your true feelings. He draws near, inviting you to rest in the truth that you are seen, known, and deeply loved.

As you pray, use this breath prayer to open your heart to God’s extraordinary love:

Inhale: God fill me today
Exhale: With Your love

Let His love fill the spaces where you feel forgotten. Breathe in the truth that you are known and held by the God who sees you fully.

Kid Connection: Wonder Together

“If we could see how much God loves us, what do you think it would look like? Maybe like an ocean that never ends or the biggest hug ever?” After they answer, you might add, “God’s love for you is even bigger than my love—and I love you so much my heart could burst!”
