Victim mentality causes us to blame others or outside circumstances for our problems. But as vulnerable as we are to developing a victim mentality, we can get ourselves out of this frame of mind. In this Bible Reading Plan, we’ll look at the truths that can help us step out of a victim mindset and into a posture of victory.

Day 1
Scripture: Romans 12:2
Victim mentality is like wearing a pair of glasses that tints everything with a sense of powerlessness. It causes us to blame others or outside circumstances for our problems. But as vulnerable as we are to developing a victim mentality, we can get ourselves out of this frame of mind.
Romans 12:2 nudges us to break free from thought patterns like this. The key is asking God to transform our thinking and giving us a fresh outlook on life.
Think about those moments when you might’ve slipped into a victim mindset. Pick one area where you want to flip the script from victim to victor and ask God for help in changing your perspective.
Day 2
Scripture: Philippians 4:13
The words we repeat to ourselves can have a huge impact on our frame of mind. Sometimes our most repeated thoughts do more harm than good – but by replacing those unhelpful mantras with words that encourage us and remind us of God’s truth, we can shift our thinking and get out of a victim mindset.
Philippians 4:13 is a great verse to come back to! It reminds us that, with God by our side, we’ve got what it takes to tackle anything – any setback life hands us.
What situation in life has you feeling like a victim right now? How could leaning into God’s strength help you overcome it? Whenever you hit a bump in the road, remember Philippians 4:13 and trust that God’s right there with you.
Day 3
Scripture: Ephesians 4:23-24
You’ve probably noticed that there’s a t-shirt for everything: bands, sports teams, tv shows, movie franchises, you name it. Clothing is a significant way that people identify themselves, and the logos we wear tell people something about who we are.
Our mindsets are like an emotional graphic tee we wear – and a victim mentality tells nothing but lies about who we are. Because God is equipping us to handle all the curveballs of life, and he can transform our minds to remember this truth, we no longer have to identify ourselves as victims.
Ephesians 4:23-24 tells us that, like putting on a new shirt, we can put on the identity God gives us. You can start by asking yourself “In this situation, what would a victorious person do?” How would someone confident in their identity as an overcomer and conqueror in Christ respond in your situation? It’s time to take off your old victim mentality and put on what God has for you!
Day 4
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:18
If a victim mentality is like glasses that make us see the world through a gloomy, hopeless lens, gratitude does the opposite. It forces our mindset to shift and spot the good in life.
The Bible doesn’t promise that life as a follower of Jesus will always be easy. In fact, it acknowledges that there are many times when it won’t be. But instead of letting the tough seasons of life knock us down – or acting like everything’s fine and ignoring our problems – we can live in the tension of experiencing difficulty yet being grateful for what God is still doing in our lives.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 reminds us to keep a thankful heart, no matter what’s going on around us. In the hard situation you’re walking through right now, what are you noticing God doing in and around you? How is he making you stronger, more compassionate, or more resilient? Over time, pay attention to how focusing on the good stuff changes your perspective.
Day 5
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:57
As you’re doing the work to get rid of a victim mentality, we’ve got some good news. Victory isn’t something you have to work toward and hope to attain one day – it’s already yours!
1 Corinthians 15:57 reminds us that the victory’s already ours through Jesus Christ. Jesus became the ultimate victim, dying on the cross and overcoming the sins of the world so that we wouldn’t have to!
When we trust Jesus to be our savior and have ultimate rule in our lives, we’re already victorious. Even when life doesn’t go the way we hoped it would, even when we fall back into an old habit that we swore we’d shake, even when it feels like everyone is against us, Jesus makes it possible for us to break out of victimhood. Declare that victory loud and proud today!
