Baltimore Officer Suspended After Trying to Run Over Citizen

A video that recently circulated online shows a marked patrol car in the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) pursuing a man in the city’s Park Heights area. The footage begins with the officer ordering a group of young men to leave an area along Wylie Avenue. According to witness and videographer Slick Brown, after the group moved, the officer returned and told one of the men to “come here” without explanation. When the young man declined and walked into an alley, the officer re-entered the vehicle and drove at full speed in pursuit of him, at one point crashing through a fence into a yard.

The man being chased says he was hit at least once by the patrol car and suffered a knee injury, though he is expected to recover. The incident prompted the BPD to suspend the officer’s policing powers while an internal affairs investigation is underway.

Top officials reacted strongly. BPD Commissioner Richard Worley described the footage as “disturbing” and “alarming,” saying it falls short of the department’s standards. Meanwhile, Brandon Scott, mayor of Baltimore, called the video “deeply concerning,” and Ivan Bates, the city’s state’s attorney, announced that his office’s Public Trust & Police Integrity Unit has opened a “thorough and comprehensive” investigation, including a decision to exclude the officer from any active prosecutions while the probe continues.

The chase reportedly began because the man had a failure to appear in court for driving without a license, an issue that came to light following the incident.
