A massive explosion tore through a military explosives facility in Tennessee early Friday, officials say, killing some and leaving 19 people missing

The blast struck Accurate Energetic Systems, a plant specializing in explosives for military, aerospace, and commercial demolition use, at about 7:45 a.m. local time. It was centered in one of the eight buildings on its sprawling campus near Bucksnort, about 60 miles southwest of Nashville.

Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said multiple fatalities had occurred, though he declined to state an exact figure, referring to those missing as “souls” still being sought. He also said “four or five” individuals had been hospitalized, but cautioned that numbers may change.

Describing the scene, the sheriff said the building was completely obliterated. “There’s nothing to describe. It’s gone,” he said. First responders were initially unable to enter the site because small secondary explosions remained a danger.

Investigations have begun, with the FBI, ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives), and other agencies on site. Authorities warn it may take days to determine the precise cause.

The state’s emergency operations center has been elevated to support local efforts, and a missing persons hotline has been activated. Sheriff Davis cautioned that additional small explosions might still occur.

Local residents reported feeling the blast miles away. One person said it jolted him awake and at first felt like his house was collapsing.

Accurate Energetic Systems operates over a large 1,300‑acre campus, handling manufacturing, testing and storage of explosive materials. The company has existing contracts with the U.S. military, producing bulk explosives, breaching charges, and similar ordnance.

In 2019, the firm was fined by OSHA over safety violations, including a “serious” sanitation issue. Company officials have expressed cooperation with investigators.

The plant lies on the boundary of Hickman and Humphreys counties.
