Boston’s sanctuary Sheriff, Steve Tompkins, was arrested on federal extortion charges Friday.
Tompkins is known for having expelled ICE from his jails back in 2019.
According to the FBI, Suffolk County Sheriff Steven Tompkins was taken into custody in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, following an investigation by FBI Boston. He is accused of extorting $50,000 from the owner of a national cannabis retail company looking to operate in Boston.
Tompkins, 67, was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of Extortion Under Color of Official Right, the Justice Department confirmed.
U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley stated, “Sheriff Tompkins, who oversees over 1,000 employees and was elected by Suffolk County residents, allegedly used his official position to extort money for personal gain. Public officials, especially those in law enforcement, are expected to act ethically and honestly, not for self-interest. His alleged conduct betrays the trust of voters and taxpayers and undermines the integrity of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. Our administration prioritizes fighting public corruption and will prosecute anyone abusing their position of power.”
