In a sweeping overnight operation dubbed “Operation Absolute Resolve,” U.S. forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during coordinated strikes across Caracas. The mission involved roughly 150 aircraft and targeted key military and infrastructure sites, including Fuerte Tiuna and major ports and air bases. President Donald Trump said the goal was to dismantle what he called a criminal regime and bring Maduro to face U.S. drug trafficking charges.
Maduro was flown to New York and is being held pending trial. U.S. officials said no American troops were killed, though several were injured, while Venezuelan authorities reported dozens of fatalities, including civilians. Washington said it would oversee a transition in Venezuela until a new government is established.
The arrest sparked celebrations among some in Venezuela’s diaspora, while critics in the U.S. and abroad condemned the strike as a violation of sovereignty. Venezuela’s government denounced the operation as an ആക്രമation aimed at its oil resources and declared a state of emergency.
Opposition figures, including María Corina Machado, called the moment a turning point for freedom, while questions remain over who will lead a transitional government. The dramatic escalation follows months of heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas over alleged drug trafficking, sanctions and regional security.
