On Monday, Texas Senator John Cornyn visited the Camp East Montana site at Fort Bliss in El Paso. The facility, set to begin operations on August 17, will initially house up to 1,000 undocumented immigrants, with plans to increase its capacity to 5,000 within two years. This expansion would make it the largest federal detention center in the U.S., according to the Department of Defense. The $1.2 billion facility is being developed under a DOD contract and will function as a processing center, where migrants will be referred to ICE Air Operations for deportation flights.

The center will offer detainees access to legal services, healthcare, and recreational areas—similar to other ICE facilities—according to ICE spokesperson Leticia Zamarripa. It will also accommodate individuals with disabilities and support specific dietary and religious needs. The structures will be primarily soft-sided, using canvas tents, as noted by the Department of Homeland Security.
