Pressure is building on Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for Virginia Attorney General, to step aside after shocking 2022 text messages surfaced in which he fantasized about violence toward former House Speaker Todd Gilbert. Republicans — including President Trump, Vice President Vance, and Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle‑Sears — have called for him to withdraw. His opponent, incumbent AG Jason Miyares (R), released a hard‑hitting ad asking whether Jones could be trusted to protect children.
Gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger, while condemning the texts and expressing disgust, has stopped short of demanding his exit. But Republicans are now pressing her and other Democrats to distance themselves more forcefully. A Republican strategist noted that in October’s tight races, controversies like this tend to stick and may sway voters who don’t usually follow down‑ballot contests.
In the messages, Jones allegedly wrote: “Three people, two bullets. Gilbert, Hitler, and Pol Pot—Gilbert gets two bullets to the head,” and implied that Gilbert’s family should suffer to motivate him. After the texts became public, Jones apologized, saying the language was “abhorrent,” that he was “embarrassed, ashamed,” and that he had reached out to Gilbert to atone. Spanberger and other Virginia Democratic leaders also condemned the remarks and called for accountability, though they emphasized the bigger stakes of the election.
Jones’s campaign is now in crisis. Republican groups have launched a $1.5 million ad blitz highlighting the “two bullets” text. Miyares dismissed Jones’s apology as opportunistic, saying it came only when the story threatened his campaign. Meanwhile, Governor Youngkin joined the chorus demanding Jones drop out “in disgrace.”
With early voting already underway, the fallout could reshape not just the Attorney General contest but the broader dynamics of Virginia’s 2025 elections.
