In Uvalde, Texas, newly released body-camera footage reveals harrowing scenes of desperate parents begging law enforcement to enter Robb Elementary School immediately after a gunman began firing. Parents are heard shouting, “Whose class is he in?” and “My daughter is in there!” as chaos unfolded during one of the deadliest classroom attacks in U.S. history. Despite the urgency, nearly 400 officers waited more than 70 minutes before confronting the shooter, Salvador Ramos—leaving children trapped inside while he opened fire. Nineteen students and two teachers were killed.
These materials represent the final batch of records released after a prolonged legal battle led by families of the victims. Jesse Rizo—uncle of a nine-year-old victim—helped push for their release and hopes they may offer some comfort to families ready to view them, though he acknowledged not everyone is prepared to do so.
The footage and documents expose confusion and lack of leadership among responding officers. Some considered using tear gas or searching for a key to force entry, but no unified plan emerged.
Records also show that deputies had visited Ramos’s home in the months before the shooting after his mother expressed fear of him—reporting domestic disturbances rooted in disputes over Wi‑Fi and gaming equipment.
The slow response has been widely condemned, including by federal and state investigations. A Department of Justice review labeled the response a cascade of failures, and state lawmakers found that law enforcement, at every level, failed to prioritize saving innocent lives over their own.
Only two officers—Pete Arredondo, the Uvalde schools police chief, and Adrian Gonzales, a former school district officer—face criminal charges related to the incident. Both have pleaded not guilty to charges of child endangerment and abandonment.
