A missing-person case in Florida’s Panhandle ended on an unexpectedly uplifting note when a dog drew the attention of a patrol car and guided a deputy straight to an 86-year-old woman who had wandered off. Video released by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office shows how the dog, rather than the deputy, led the rescue effort.
It began late on the night of September 25, when the woman’s husband reported that she hadn’t returned from a short walk with their son’s dog in the Destin area. She often takes 10 to 15 minutes for this stroll, so the delay caused alarm.
Deputy Devon Miller was driving through nearby residential streets when she spotted a dog—later identified as “Eeyore”—walking alone. The dog trotted up to her patrol car, and she asked, “Hi, baby, where’s your mama?” Without hesitation, Eeyore led her through a yard, past a home, and onto a pathway adjacent to a golf course. There, the deputy found the woman lying on a sidewalk—hurt and unable to move but conscious and alert.
Paramedics were summoned, and the woman was taken to a medical facility for evaluation. While waiting on site, the deputy told her that it was the dog who had drawn her to her rescue. The woman confirmed Eeyore was her grandson’s dog—and expressed surprise and gratitude that he wouldn’t leave her side, saying, “He kept coming back to me … You’re a good boy! Grandma loves you.”
The sheriff’s office later praised the dog’s actions, writing that sometimes “heroes come with four legs and a wagging tail.”
The story struck a chord online, drawing thousands of emotional reactions from people moved by Eeyore’s loyalty and instinctive guidance.
