A 2024 U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) study titled “What NIJ Research Tells Us About Domestic Terrorism” has been quietly taken offline from the DOJ’s website in mid‑September 2025. The paper, previously hosted by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), documented that since 1990 far‑right extremist groups have carried out significantly more deadly attacks—227 incidents resulting in over 520 deaths—than far‑left or radical Islamist extremists, which were linked to far fewer attacks and deaths in that period.

Observers noticed that the report was still visible on archived versions of the DOJ website as of September 11, but by September 12, the link to the report had been removed.

The removal came shortly after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on September 10 during an event at Utah Valley University, which has heightened scrutiny of political violence and how it is framed.

When questioned, DOJ has not offered a detailed public justification for the deletion, though some officials reportedly said it was part of internal review of its web materials under recent executive orders.
