Elon Musk, in response to criticism surrounding a Netflix animated series with a transgender teenage lead, announced he had ended his own subscription to the streaming platform. He then used his social media reach — with some 226 million followers — to call for others to do the same.
Musk’s denunciation comes amid a broader backlash, including from accounts like @LibsofTikTok on the platform X, which accused Netflix of pushing what they called a “trans ideology” in children’s programming. Recently, Musk reshared and endorsed posts targeting Netflix’s Dead End: Paranormal Park and its creator, Hamish Steele. Some of the criticism also involved screenshots that reportedly showed Steele making comments about Charlie Kirk, though those screenshots and their authenticity remain unverified.
The show in question originally launched in 2022 and ran for two seasons before being canceled in 2023.
While the direct impact of Musk’s boycott campaign on Netflix’s subscriber numbers is still unclear, there are signs that some users responded: posts circulated showing people initiating cancellations, and searches for “cancel Netflix” spiked. Netflix’s stock also dipped by about 2 percent on Wednesday amid the heightened controversy.
Musk’s stance is not entirely new: he has publicly criticized “woke” content before and urged boycotts of other platforms such as Facebook, iPhones, and NPR over disagreements with their direction.
