According to sources, the FBI has dismissed a number of agents who knelt during a Washington, D.C. protest connected to the George Floyd movement in 2020. Many of those agents were based in the Washington Field Office and were photographed kneeling in early June 2020. Earlier this year some of them had already been reassigned; now, up to 20 agents have been terminated. (The FBI declined to respond to requests for comment.)

One source said the agents knelt at the urging of protesters — outnumbering federal officers — as a means of de‑escalating tensions, rather than as a political statement. An internal review reportedly concluded the kneeling was not intended as solidarity.

The FBI Agents Association sharply criticized the firings, stating they involved “more than a dozen” special agents, including veterans with legal protections. The association warned that these terminations reflect a “dangerous new pattern” under Director Kash Patel, weakening morale, undermining trust between leadership and agents, and making it more difficult to recruit or retain skilled personnel — risks that ultimately could harm national security.
