The police chief in Broadview, Illinois, is accusing ICE agents of placing fraudulent 911 calls to local law enforcement. Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills told CBS News that on one recent Thursday, his officers responded to a report that someone was tampering with the gate of the ICE detention facility. But when they arrived, all they found was a CBS News cameraman and a security guard.
According to the incident report, an ICE agent made the call. Mills said such calls are straining his department and its resources. “It’s disturbing. It’s ridiculous,” he said. In bodycam footage, responding officers questioned the call’s legitimacy, noting, “It sure doesn’t look like anyone’s forcing anything over any fence.”
This isn’t the first time this ICE facility has been controversial. In a separate event, masked ICE agents allegedly fired a pepper ball into the car of CBS reporter Asal Rezaei, even though no protest was taking place, and she was only there to observe. Mills called that episode “horrific” and said he plans to review all 911 calls originating from the detention center.
Chief Mills has floated pursuing legal action, possibly seeking subpoenas via the Cook County State’s Attorney, and has opened criminal investigations into multiple incidents involving ICE. He believes making a false 911 call qualifies as disorderly conduct or filing a false official report.
