ICE WARS: Minneapolis Insurgents Set Up Barricades; Block Cars, Run License Plates, Check IDs

Over the past few days in Minneapolis, some residents have taken matters into their own hands amid heightened federal immigration enforcement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as part of Operation Metro Surge. In several neighborhoods, makeshift street barricades and informal checkpoints have been set up by groups opposed to ICE activity. At these stops, people reportedly positioned objects such as cones or furniture in roadways and flagged down passing vehicles, asking drivers for identification and sometimes running license plates through community databases to try to identify whether the vehicle might be linked to ICE before allowing it to continue.

Social media posts and videos shared by local observers showed the checkpoints in areas of south Minneapolis, including around 32nd to 34th Streets and Cedar Avenue, where individuals on foot interacted with motorists. They urged others to contact the city’s mayor and police leadership to address what they described as unauthorized roadblocks.

The activity reflects broader unease in Minneapolis over federal immigration enforcement, which has drawn both protests and civic pushback. Residents organizing these checkpoints say their intent is to slow or monitor the movement of ICE personnel through their neighborhoods, while critics and public officials have raised safety concerns about blocking public streets and stopping vehicles without legal authority.

City leaders have repeatedly emphasized that while people have the right to protest peacefully, obstructing traffic and creating unofficial checkpoints can create hazards for emergency vehicles and impede public safety. Law enforcement crews have periodically dismantled some of the makeshift barricades in response.

This grassroots response comes amid long-running tensions in the Twin Cities over federal immigration operations, which have included mass arrests and confrontations between agents and local communities.
