Rep. Ilhan Omar, the Democrat from Minnesota, engaged in a tense back‑and‑forth on CNN with host Kaitlan Collins regarding a video she shared on social media and her critical statements about conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The video referred to Kirk as “Dr. Frankenstein” and said that “his monster shot him through the neck.” Collins pressed Omar on why she would repost such content.

Omar defended her decision by saying she didn’t agree with every word in the video but felt much of it reflected truths about Kirk’s public persona and rhetoric. She stated her view that he was “reprehensible” and “hateful,” especially toward many identities she belongs to—and that he did not believe in equal access or in the intellectual equality of women or people of color.

During the exchange, Omar challenged Collins directly, asking her how she could not find Kirk’s statements reprehensible. She pushed back against what she saw as efforts to gloss over or sanitize Kirk’s record now that he has died, rejecting calls to honor his legacy or memorialize it without reckoning with his earlier rhetoric. “I am not going to sit here and be judged for not wanting to honor any legacy this man has left behind,” she said, stating that Kirk’s record should be placed in the “dustbin of history.”

Collins responded by acknowledging Omar’s freedom to hold her views, but questioned whether it was appropriate to repost such harsh criticism so soon after the assassination of someone who was a husband and father, asking whether there should be more restraint in the aftermath of such a death.

Omar also emphasized that she had immediately condemned Kirk’s assassination and said political violence is wrong. She insisted that critiquing Kirk’s ideology does not equate to endorsing violence, and that it’s important to confront what she sees as the harm in his words, even as many seek to honor him.
