Officials in Riverside and San Bernardino counties held a press conference on Wednesday to provide updates regarding the presumed death of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro. This follows the recent charges of murder filed against his parents, Rebecca and Jake Haro. The authorities discussed the ongoing investigation and emphasized their belief that the child had been subjected to abuse over an extended period before ultimately succumbing to his injuries.

Although authorities have not yet located Emmanuel’s body, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin revealed that they have a strong indication of where the child’s remains might be. The investigation suggests that Emmanuel was not only the victim of one-time abuse but that the mistreatment occurred over a span of time, leading to his death.

Hestrin also addressed the parents’ public claims about their child’s disappearance. In a highly publicized interview, Rebecca Haro had falsely stated that she was attacked in a parking lot in Yucaipa on August 14, and that her baby had been kidnapped. This claim was later proven to be untrue, prompting the sheriff’s department to state that the Haros stopped cooperating with their investigation shortly after. During the interview, Jake Haro’s odd reference to his child in the past tense raised suspicions.

In their home in Cabazon, both parents were arrested last week on charges related to the death of their child. Hestrin noted that Jake Haro had a history of child abuse, referencing a 2023 case where Jake pleaded guilty to abusing one of his children from a previous relationship. That child, an infant at the time, was left bed-ridden due to the abuse, though Jake was not sentenced to prison. Instead, a judge sentenced him to probation and work release, a decision Hestrin criticized as a “grave error in judgment.” He expressed that if the judge had imposed a more appropriate sentence, Emmanuel might still be alive today.

The Haros appeared briefly in court on Tuesday for their arraignment, which lasted only a few minutes. Bail was set at $1 million for each of them, and their next court appearance is scheduled for September 4. In addition to the murder charges, they are also facing accusations of filing a false police report. Rebecca Haro is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center, while Jake is being detained at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility.
