Hamas began releasing the final hostages from Gaza on Monday morning as part of a landmark ceasefire deal brokered by former President Donald Trump. The remaining captives had been held for over two years, following their abduction during Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack.
Trump was in Israel that day and delivered a speech to the Knesset, which was briefly interrupted by far‑left lawmaker Ofer Cassif, who was quickly removed from the chamber. After his address, Trump traveled to Egypt to join other leaders in formalizing the peace agreement.
Under the terms of the deal, all 20 surviving Israeli hostages have been freed, and Israel is releasing nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees in return. The exchange marked a dramatic moment of relief and reunification for many families across the region.
Still, challenges loom. Though peaceful celebrations filled parts of Israel and Gaza, questions about how Hamas’s role in Gaza governance will evolve, and how reconstruction will proceed, remain unresolved.
