New York Governor Kathy Hochul has formally declared her support for Zohran Mamdani in his campaign to become mayor of New York City. She made the endorsement Sunday in a New York Times op‑ed, saying that despite differences between them, her discussions with Mamdani convinced her he shares her commitment to making the city more affordable and safer—especially in neighborhoods where children are growing up.

Mamdani, a 33‑year‑old democratic socialist and the Democratic nominee, has won increasing prominence and leads in the polls. Hochul’s backing is seen as a major moment, since some within the Democratic Party—particularly moderates—had been reluctant to embrace his platform because of its progressive policies.

Though Hochul supports many of Mamdani’s goals, she does not agree with all of them. For example, one of their points of difference is Mamdani’s proposal to raise taxes on wealthy New Yorkers—something that would require state approval.

The endorsement also appears to be shaped by political strategy. Hochul is preparing for her re‑election campaign and faces pressure from the more progressive wing of her party. By supporting Mamdani, she may be trying to unify the party and appeal to its left flank.

At the same time, critics—including some Republicans and more moderate Democrats—have voiced concerns about Mamdani’s policies and rhetoric, especially on issues like public safety, taxation, and his views on Israel. Hochul’s support may thus carry both benefits and political risks.
