The Los Angeles Police Department has withdrawn its temporary security detail for former Vice President Kamala Harris following internal backlash over diverted crime-fighting resources. Until Saturday, LAPD Metropolitan Division officers had helped the California Highway Patrol safeguard Harris’s Brentwood residence after President Trump revoked her Secret Service protection—previously extended by President Biden beyond the typical six-month post-office period.

Acting on Mayor Karen Bass’s directive amid fears that Trump’s decision was politically motivated, the LAPD stepped in to fill the security gap. However, the move drew sharp criticism from within the department, with concerns raised that high-priority officers were being pulled from crime suppression duties, particularly in the San Fernando Valley.

On Saturday, the LAPD officially ended its role in protecting Harris. The department stated this was always intended to be a short-term arrangement until a more permanent solution could be arranged. Mayor Bass reaffirmed that the temporary support had been planned and thanked the LAPD for prioritizing Angeleno safety.

Union leaders representing rank-and-file officers were particularly vocal. They criticized the use of public resources for the protection of a wealthy individual, calling out the move as unreasonable and urging state leadership to shoulder security arrangements without burdening taxpayers.

Meanwhile, the CHP has not detailed how this shift in local protection will impact its operations or how long it will continue stepping in.
