A truck driver has been arrested in connection with a deadly crash on Florida’s Turnpike that claimed the lives of three people. The incident occurred when the semi-truck driver, Harjinder Singh, made an illegal U-turn in a restricted “official use only” area, blocking northbound lanes and causing a Chrysler Town & Country minivan to slam into the trailer. The three occupants of the minivan—a 30-year-old man from Florida City, a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach, and a 54-year-old man from Miami—did not survive the crash.
Authorities confirmed that Singh entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 and had obtained a commercial driver’s license in California despite his undocumented status.
He has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and is also facing immigration violations. An ICE detainer has been issued, meaning he will likely be deported once state proceedings are complete.
Officials described Singh’s actions as reckless and senseless. Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles executive director Dave Kerner called the crash a result of disregard for the safety of others and noted the profound grief it has caused to families and the community.
