MSNBC has terminated political analyst Matthew Dowd after he made controversial remarks about Charlie Kirk following Kirk’s shooting. Dowd appeared on MSNBC Live with Katy Tur shortly after Kirk was shot, suggesting that Kirk’s divisive public rhetoric and alleged “hate speech” could have contributed to an environment where violence like this might occur.
During the broadcast, Dowd also speculated—without evidence—that the gunshot might have come from one of Kirk’s own supporters firing in celebration. His comments sparked widespread backlash for appearing to blame Kirk in part for his own death.
MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler publicly called Dowd’s comments “inappropriate, insensitive, and unacceptable,” and the network issued an apology. Dowd also apologized, saying he did not mean to assign blame to Kirk for the tragedy. Sources report that Dowd is no longer with MSNBC.
