In a case that has sparked national outrage, prosecutors in Minnesota officially brought charges earlier this week against a woman, identified as Shiloh Hendrix, for directing a racist slur toward a Black child at a Rochester playground. The complaint accuses her of “offensive, obscene, abusive” conduct that was likely to provoke alarm, anger, or resentment in others—a violation of the state’s disorderly conduct statute.
The April incident went viral on social media after a man filmed Hendrix confronting the child, who—an eyewitness later said—had taken an applesauce pouch from another parent’s diaper bag. When the man questioned her about using the slur, she not only admitted it but doubled down, repeated the racist term, and even flipped him off.
Following the public backlash, Hendrix launched a fundraising campaign on the Christian crowdfunding platform GiveSendGo, citing harassment, threats, and the need to relocate her family for safety. Remarkably, she has since raised over US$800,000—far exceeding her initial goal of US$1 million—with many donations coming even after the criminal charges were filed.
The legal stakes are modest on paper: she faces three misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct, each punishable by up to 90 days in jail or a fine of up to $1,000, though Minnesota judges often issue lighter sentences. Hendrix has been summoned to appear in court for her arraignment on October 29, 2025 .
Mayor Kim Norton of Rochester addressed the fallout, stating the incident caused profound turmoil in the community—particularly among communities of color—and emphasizing the importance of acknowledging its broader impact locally and nationally.
The timeline of investigation was prolonged due to the complex and sensitive nature of the case, as well as the necessity of coordinating with the victim’s family during the legal review process.
In solidarity with the victim’s family, the Rochester chapter of the NAACP launched its own GoFundMe campaign, raising $340,000 before closing the page to honor the family’s request for privacy. The organization characterized the charges as a meaningful first step toward justice and called for empathy and accountability rather than hate in community interactions.
