In Mississippi, what should have been joyful high school homecoming festivities turned tragic Friday night, as two separate shootings—on opposite sides of the state—left at least eight dead and dozens wounded.
In the Delta city of Leland, a celebration in the downtown area after the homecoming football game erupted in gunfire. Four people died on the spot, and two more later died at a local hospital, according to the county coroner. Around 20 others were injured; four of them were in critical condition and were airlifted to Jackson for more intensive care.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes of people running and collapsing under fire, with one saying she watched bodies fall as she sought cover under a vehicle. Local officials called the violence “senseless gun violence” and expressed frustration over the widespread availability of firearms. As of Saturday morning, no arrests had been made in connection with the Leland shooting.
Meanwhile, in Heidelberg — on the eastern side of the state — police were investigating a shooting on a high school campus during its homecoming celebrations. Two people died, including a pregnant woman. Authorities are seeking an 18‑year‑old suspect in that case.
In addition, in Sharkey County (also in the Delta region), another shooting occurred after a high school football game. Two people have been arrested in that incident, though details on possible injuries remain unclear.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has joined forces with local and federal law enforcement to probe all these shootings. Governor Tate Reeves offered prayers and vowed that those responsible will be brought to justice.
