President Donald Trump made a first reaction Wednesday after reports that Russian drones violated Polish airspace overnight — a move condemned by Poland and European leaders as an “unprecedented” provocation.
Trump’s statement on his social media platform was brief and somewhat vague: “What’s with Russia violating Poland’s airspace with drones? Here we go!”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says at least 19 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, some reportedly coming from Belarus. NATO and Polish military forces scrambled jets, including Polish F‑16s and Dutch F‑35s, to intercept the incursion. This marks the first time NATO aircraft have engaged possible threats inside allied airspace in this way.
In response, Poland invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which calls for consultations among member countries when one is threatened. Leaders in Washington and elsewhere reiterated their support for Poland, saying that NATO stands ready to defend every inch of allied territory.
Other European heads, including French President Emmanuel Macron, strongly condemned the violation, calling Russia’s actions a reckless escalation.
