President Donald Trump has filed a defamation and libel lawsuit seeking $15 billion from The New York Times, four NYT journalists, and Penguin Random House. The legal action was lodged in federal court in Florida.

In the suit, Trump accuses the defendants of publishing false or misleading content about him, his family, his business dealings, and the MAGA movement. He claims several articles and a book—Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success—were part of a long‑standing pattern of “intentional and malicious defamation.”

Trump also takes issue with a front‑page editorial by the Times endorsing Kamala Harris before the 2024 presidential election, calling that an extreme instance of bias. His legal team alleges that the negative reporting caused serious harm to his reputation, personal brand, business interests (including the value of Trump Media & Technology Group stock), and overall financial prospects.

The New York Times has responded by rejecting the lawsuit as baseless, calling it an attempt to silence or intimidate the press.

Legal experts have noted that because Trump is a public figure, the burden of proof in defamation cases is high: he must show not just that statements were false, but that they were made with actual malice (i.e. knowing falsity or reckless disregard). Some critics see this lawsuit as part of a broader strategy by Trump to use litigation against media outlets he claims are unfriendly or biased.
