Prince Andrew ly the title of Duke of York — following discussions with King Charles III and other senior members of the royal family. In a statement via Buckingham Palace, he said that “the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” and thus he is stepping back further from his public role.
Although he retains the dukedom in name (because only Parliament can revoke it officially), he will no longer use the title publicly. He will also relinquish other high honours, such as his membership in the Order of the Garter and his Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
His former wife, Sarah Ferguson, will stop using the “Duchess of York” title and revert to “Sarah Ferguson,” while their daughters’ titles remain unchanged.
The move comes amid renewed publicity over Andrew’s longstanding association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including recent revelations tied to a forthcoming memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who earlier accused him of sexual abuse when she was a teenager. Although Andrew has repeatedly denied the allegations, the ongoing scrutiny is said to have prompted this decision.
In practical terms, Andrew will continue living at the Royal Lodge in Windsor under a private tenancy agreement and will also be excluded from certain family events, including the traditional Christmas gathering at Sandringham, according to sources.
