Raid of church leader’s Florida mansion reveals 57 forced laborers, feds say

In August 2025, federal authorities uncovered a disturbing case of forced labor and financial exploitation involving the Kingdom of God Global Church, led by David E. Taylor and Michelle Brannon. The investigation revealed that 57 individuals were confined in deplorable conditions at a lavish mansion in Tampa, Florida, where they were subjected to grueling labor without compensation. These victims were coerced into working at call centers and serving as personal attendants to Taylor, enduring physical and psychological abuse.

Taylor, who self-identifies as “Apostle,” and Brannon, his executive director, established a network of call centers across multiple states, including Michigan, Texas, Florida, and Missouri. They allegedly manipulated followers into meeting unattainable donation targets, punishing those who failed to comply with tactics such as public humiliation, sleep deprivation, and threats of divine retribution. The operation is estimated to have generated over $50 million in donations over the past decade.

During the raid on the Tampa property, authorities discovered evidence of the leaders’ extravagant lifestyle, including luxury vehicles, designer items, and $500,000 worth of gold bars. Additionally, investigators found explicit videos on Taylor’s devices, further implicating him in the abuse. The FBI’s findings suggest that the victims were isolated, denied basic freedoms, and subjected to severe control measures.

Both Taylor and Brannon face multiple federal charges, including forced labor and conspiracy to commit money laundering. They are scheduled to stand trial in Michigan, where their church is headquartered. This case highlights the potential for abuse within religious organizations and underscores the need for vigilance and accountability to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
