High school students in Rhode Island are moving to establish a Turning Point USA chapter after a teacher publicly mocked the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. According to Fox News Digital, the incident became a catalyst for several Barrington High School students who felt conservative viewpoints needed a place on campus.
The chapter’s vice president said he was personally motivated to get involved after learning that one of the school’s teachers had posted a TikTok video reacting to Kirk’s assassination in September at Utah Valley University. In the video, the teacher expressed no sympathy for Kirk, claimed he “hated the LGBTQ community” and “hated women’s rights,” and went on to call him a “piece of garbage.” The teacher, identified as Benjamin Fillo, was later placed on administrative leave following the backlash.
Student leaders say forming the chapter has not been easy, but they believe it is necessary. The vice president explained that their goal is to create an environment where conservative students feel they can express political or religious beliefs without fear of being dismissed or stigmatized.
Caleb Kaplan, who serves as the chapter’s president, said the group is trying to move forward respectfully despite resistance from some in the school community. The students argue that establishing the club is about ensuring ideological diversity and giving conservative students a supportive space to engage in civic discussions.
