Robert Redford, the celebrated actor, director, producer and founder of the Sundance Institute, has died at the age of 89. His publicist, Cindi Berger, said he passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 16, 2025, at his beloved home in Sundance, Utah, surrounded by loved ones.
Redford’s career spanned more than six decades. He was widely known for his leading roles in classic films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, All the President’s Men, and Out of Africa. He later became an award‑winning director, with Ordinary People (1980) among his most acclaimed works.
Beyond his film work, Redford was deeply committed to environmental activism and supporting independent film. He founded the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival, which over time became one of the most important platforms for independent filmmakers.
He is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, his daughters, and grandchildren. His life and legacy are being honored by many in the arts, conservation, and film communities.
