Rosie O’Donnell Says Security Told Her Not to Come Back to the U.S. for Daughter’s Graduation Due to Trump Feud: He’ll ‘Use Me to Rile His Base’

Rosie O’Donnell revealed on the No Filter podcast that she made the difficult decision to miss her daughter Vivienne’s college graduation after being advised that attending posed serious security risks, due to her ongoing feud with Donald Trump. Now living in Ireland, O’Donnell explained that her security team believed her presence could be exploited by Trump to inflame his political base, a prospect she wanted to avoid.

Her relocation to Ireland earlier this year followed Trump’s re-election and continued political tensions. During the podcast, she remarked on the personal toll of the feud, saying that Trump’s derogatory tactics embolden others to harass her and even confront her in public, at times in front of her child.

O’Donnell has long been a target in the feud. In July, Trump publicly mused about revoking her U.S. citizenship via his social media platform—something he has no legal power to do. In another interview, she dismissed his threat, noting that such attacks have been part of a two-decade-long antagonism between them.

As for returning to the U.S., O’Donnell emphasized that she’ll only consider it when every citizen’s rights are truly protected and respected—a sentiment underscored in her Instagram tribute celebrating Vivienne’s graduation.

Highlights

  • Missed graduation: O’Donnell sat out her daughter’s college ceremony after being warned her presence could be politicized by Trump.

  • Security impact: She believes Trump’s habit of demeaning her publicly encourages others to mimic that behavior.

  • Citizenship threat: Trump flirted with revoking her citizenship—a move O’Donnell dismissed as legally baseless.

  • Cautious return: She plans to return to the U.S. only when she feels the country is safe and equitable for all.
