During a junior varsity game in Michigan between Lakeshore High School and Kalamazoo Central, a disturbing incident occurred in the third quarter when a 15‑year‑old Lakeshore player named Colton was injured severely after being tackled and then slammed with the full body weight of a larger opponent. The incident has been widely shared on video.

Doctors determined that Colton suffered fractures in his spine in two places. He was hospitalized and treated, and now is recovering at home on muscle relaxants. There is concern that while a full recovery may be possible, it’s unclear if he will ever be able to return to playing football.

Colton’s mother, Courtney Mims, described how she first didn’t realize her son was the one injured, but once she understood, she was emotionally shaken. She spoke about how much football means to him—how much of his day is devoted to practice, training, commitment—and how painful it is to see him potentially lose that due to a single reckless act.

In terms of consequences, the schools involved and the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) say they are investigating the matter “internally.” Kalamazoo Central High School issued a statement condemning the behavior, saying it does not reflect the values of their football program or school community, and indicating that the student responsible has been disciplined according to the school code of conduct. However, no details have been made public about the nature or extent of that discipline.

After the incident, Lakeshore’s varsity team defeated Kalamazoo Central 26‑7; they dedicated the win to Colton, posting that “this one was for Colton.”
