James Yokeley Jr. resigned from his position as chair of the Surry County Board of Elections in North Carolina after being accused of contaminating his granddaughters’ ice cream with illegal drugs. The 66-year-old, who had been appointed to the board in July 2023, was charged by Wilmington police with food contamination and felony child abuse.

According to reports, preliminary tests on the pills found in the ice cream indicated the presence of MDMA (ecstasy) and cocaine. The pills were sent for further testing at a state lab. Yokeley’s resignation came as the State Board of Elections prepares to appoint a new chair, following nominations from the North Carolina Republican Party.

The incident occurred on August 8 when Yokeley allegedly approached a police officer at a Sheetz gas station, claiming that his granddaughters had discovered hard objects in their ice cream from Dairy Queen. However, medical personnel confirmed the girls had not ingested the substances, and subsequent tests indicated they were narcotics.

Video footage revealed that Yokeley was the one who had placed the pills into the ice cream. He was arrested and taken to the New Hanover County Detention Center, where he was later released on a $100,000 bond. The investigation is still ongoing.
