Two 15-year-olds from Hyattsville, Maryland, who took part in a brutal group attack on former DOGE staffer Edward “Big Balls” Coristine, have avoided prison after pleading guilty to simple assault in a Washington, D.C. court.

The male teen received a 12-month probation and was allowed to remain at home under strict house arrest conditions. The female teen was handed a 9-month probation sentence and placed in a local youth shelter. As part of their sentences, both were barred from contacting each other and were restricted from being in D.C. except for required court obligations.

The assault occurred just after 3 a.m. on August 3, in the Logan Circle area of D.C. The group of teens attempted to force their way into Coristine’s vehicle and steal it; his companion had managed to lock the doors. Coristine intervened, and the attackers then physically assaulted him, leaving him with a concussion and a broken nose.

During the sentencing, Coristine, speaking by video, addressed the teens: “I hope you can figure things out and be ready for the consequences.” He also expressed gratitude to the court and law enforcement for pursuing the case.

The outcome has drawn strong criticism from public figures. Elon Musk publicly denounced the sentence, calling it racially biased and suggesting that if the races were reversed, the teens would have been jailed. Former President Donald Trump also slammed the decision as too lenient, tying it to broader concerns about juvenile crime in D.C. and using the case to justify his push to federalize law enforcement in the capital.
