Early Wednesday morning, a gunman opened fire on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas, striking three detainees held inside a vehicle at the secure entrance area (the “sally port”).

  • One detainee died at the scene. Two others were critically wounded and taken to hospital.

  • No ICE personnel or law enforcement officers were harmed.

The attacker, later identified as Joshua Jahn, 29, was found dead from a self‑inflicted gunshot.

Method & apparent intent

  • The shooter fired multiple rounds from a nearby rooftop or elevated location, targeting both the entry area and the van carrying detainees.

  • At the crime scene, investigators discovered shell casings and bullets marked with “anti‑ICE” messages, which law enforcement sees as a strong clue to the attack’s motive.

  • Handwritten notes recovered at Jahn’s residence reinforce the view that he harbored animosity toward ICE, expressed a desire to terrorize its agents, and claimed he was acting alone.

  • Jahn also appears to have planned in advance: he had reportedly researched ICE facilities, used apps to monitor ICE agents, and obtained documents listing federal sites.

Unknowns & responses

  • While evidence strongly suggests the attack was ideologically driven and specifically targeted at ICE, investigators have not identified an external group that directed or coordinated it.

  • The identities of the victims have not been publicly disclosed, though one of the wounded detainees has been confirmed as a Mexican national.

  • In the wake of the attack, the Department of Homeland Security announced it will bolster security at ICE offices nationwide.

  • Officials are continuing to probe Jahn’s background, motive, and whether this event reflects a broader trend of violent threats against immigration enforcement.
