The issue of missing children under the Biden administration has resurfaced, with serious allegations about the handling of unaccompanied minors. Investigative reporter Breanna Morello revealed in May that around 300,000 children went missing during Biden’s presidency, and according to her, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) provided false addresses for these children, hindering efforts to locate them.

Morello pointed out that it is now the responsibility of the Trump administration to find these missing minors. Further revelations came in July when it was disclosed that the Biden administration had allocated $6 billion in funding to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) through DHS and Health and Human Services. These NGOs, however, were placing unaccompanied minors with “poorly vetted sponsors,” raising concerns about the children’s safety.

Ali Hopper, the founder of GUARD Against Trafficking, testified that the post-placement welfare checks for these children consisted of just two phone calls. If the sponsor did not answer, no further follow-up was made. Between August 2023 and January 2025, 65,000 calls went unanswered, which aligns with Morello’s claim that the Biden administration did not seem to prioritize verifying who these children were being handed over to.

Tom Homan, a former DHS official, stated that his team has successfully located 23,000 of the missing children and emphasized that they will continue their search until they find all 300,000 or exhaust every lead. He also criticized the previous administration for not actively pursuing these cases. Homan further addressed the issue of sanctuary cities, particularly Chicago, and the role they play in releasing individuals deemed threats to public safety instead of cooperating with ICE for deportation. He stated that the Trump administration is committed to focusing on sanctuary cities, as they are a significant part of the problem.

Leaders in sanctuary cities are now facing potential criminal charges for failing to comply with a Department of Justice deadline to cooperate with Homeland Security and ICE.
