Tyler James Robinson, 22, has been officially charged with the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, whose shooting on September 10 at Utah Valley University has drawn national attention. Prosecutors say there is substantial evidence, including texts, a confession, and a note, to support charges of aggravated murder and several related offenses.
According to court documents, Robinson sent a text message to his roommate and romantic partner on the day of the killing telling them to “drop what you are doing, look under my keyboard.” Under the keyboard was a note stating: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
In subsequent messages, the partner, shocked, asked if Robinson was joking and whether he was really the shooter. Robinson allegedly replied, “I am, I’m sorry.” When asked why, he said it was because he had “enough of [Kirk’s] hatred,” adding “some hate can’t be negotiated out.”
The documents also indicate Robinson had been planning the attack for “a bit over a week.” He discussed hiding or retrieving the rifle he used, referred to it as a gun given to him by his grandfather, and worried about leaving evidence. He allegedly asked his partner to delete their message exchange and instructed them not to speak with media or police without a lawyer.
Investigators found a bolt‑action rifle wrapped in a towel in a wooded area near the university. The bullet casings (both fired and unfired) from the weapon were etched with various phrases—many referencing internet culture and meme‑style messages, such as “hey fascist! catch!” and “If you read this, you are GAY lmao.” Robinson allegedly characterized the engravings as “mostly a big meme.”
Robinson is being held without bail. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
