Trump Calls For Ilhan Omar’s Removal From Congress

President Donald Trump has joined other Republicans in demanding that Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota be expelled from Congress. The push follows her recent remarks in an interview with Mehdi Hasan, where Omar appeared to defend the killing of political commentator Charlie Kirk by suggesting that Kirk himself provoked it with his rhetoric. During the interview, she criticized those who portray Kirk as merely interested in civil debate, arguing that his past statements on topics like guns, slavery, George Floyd, and Juneteenth show a different record.

Some House Republicans introduced a resolution to censure Omar and remove her from committee assignments over those remarks and another social media post she re-shared. The effort, however, was narrowly defeated in the House, thanks to a few Republicans siding with Democrats in the vote.

Trump has said Omar “should be impeached” and called her “terrible,” arguing that removing her would be preferable to a mere censure. He has also made statements criticizing her background and questioned her ability to criticize the U.S., given her Somali origins.

The failed resolution to censure Omar has not ended the controversy; Republicans continue to push for disciplinary actions. Legal experts warn that many of these proposed punishments may run up against First Amendment protections, as they involve sanctioning a member of Congress for speech.
