Trump live updates: President expands ‘narco’ boat strikes to Pacific Ocean as 8th boat is struck

A new survey shows most Americans oppose Donald Trump’s plan to tear down the East Wing of the White House. According to a well-publicised poll, 42 percent of respondents say they “strongly disapprove” of the demolition. Another 13 percent “disapprove,” and an equal 13 percent believe the teardown is a good idea.

Trump has argued the changes were overdue — insisting they had been needed “at least 150 years” and dismissing the East Wing as “never thought of as being much.” Yet observers note that the detailed design plans for the massive 90,000-square-foot ballroom addition have not been submitted to the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), the federal body that oversees construction of government buildings. Meanwhile, Trump has held a fundraising dinner courting major companies including Palantir Technologies and Amazon for private funding of the ballroom.

All this is unfolding amid the backdrop of the ongoing federal government shutdown, now in its third week, and after Trump demanded that the U.S. Department of Justice pay him $230 million over probes of his 2016 campaign.

While the project is framed by Trump’s team as modernising a symbolic building and creating additional event space, critics argue it undermines historic preservation, lacks transparency and appears tone-deaf given the broader political and fiscal climate. The poll results reflect growing public unease with both the scale of the renovation and the manner in which it is being pursued.
