WASHINGTON — President Trump announced Friday that he had directed two nuclear submarines to move closer to Russia in response to what he described as “highly provocative statements” by a senior Russian official.
The remarks came after Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, directly taunted Trump on social media. Medvedev warned that escalating ultimatums could lead to war, adding that words carry weight and may lead to unintended consequences.
While Trump didn’t point to a specific comment as the reason for the move, he referenced Medvedev’s recent rhetoric, which has included repeated anti-American statements. When questioned by The Post before leaving for his Bedminster, NJ, club, Trump said Medvedev’s posts made nuclear threats clear.
“He’s talking about nuclear — and when that happens, you have to be ready. And we are fully prepared,” Trump said, though he didn’t clarify whether the submarines were nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed.
Military officials typically keep submarine movements classified, so it’s unclear whether the deployment will be confirmed. The Pentagon redirected media inquiries to the White House, which declined further comment.
This marks the first time Trump has hinted at using nuclear capabilities in his standoff with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has continued to ignore U.S. warnings over the war in Ukraine. Trump also issued a fresh warning, threatening Russia with secondary sanctions if it doesn’t end the conflict by August 8.
Medvedev, in his social media post, warned Trump not to make comparisons between Russia and other nations like Israel or Iran and said every new threat brings the world closer to a wider conflict — not just with Ukraine, but potentially with the U.S. directly. He also mocked Trump by referencing his own nickname for President Biden, “Sleepy Joe.”
Although Medvedev’s current role is mostly symbolic and less influential than Putin’s, he frequently makes harsh and undiplomatic statements. In recent months, he has criticized both Biden and Trump, and has previously suggested nuclear retaliation if the U.S. were to provide Ukraine with such weapons.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump stated: “I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.” He did not specify where the submarines were deployed.
