President Donald J. Trump drew sharp criticism online Thursday night after sharing a short video clip on his Truth Social platform that briefly included an altered image depicting former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as monkeys.
The one-minute video largely focused on disputing the results of the 2020 presidential election in Pennsylvania, featuring claims and charts that questioned Joe Biden’s victory in the state. Near the end of the clip, at around the 59-second mark, an AI-generated image appeared showing Obama’s face superimposed onto a monkey’s body, accompanied by the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
The post quickly prompted backlash across social media platforms. Critics described the imagery as offensive and inappropriate, particularly given the long history of racist depictions comparing Black individuals to monkeys.
Among those responding was Gavin Newsom, whose office issued a statement condemning the post and calling it “disgusting behavior by the President.” The controversy added to ongoing political tensions surrounding Trump’s continued challenges to the 2020 election results and his use of social media to amplify those claims.
