Trump says Democrats have ‘blood on their hands’ after deadly Charlotte train stabbing

President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Democrats following the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska aboard a Charlotte light rail train. Surveillance footage released by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) shows Zarutska boarding the train before being attacked by Decarlos Brown Jr., a 34-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history. Brown allegedly stabbed Zarutska multiple times, including once in the neck, before calmly exiting the train. He was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with first-degree murder.

In response to the tragedy, Trump took to social media, stating, “The blood of this innocent woman can literally be seen dripping from the killer’s knife, and now her blood is on the hands of the Democrats who refuse to put bad people in jail.” He also criticized former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, suggesting that his policies contributed to the release of violent offenders like Brown. Trump’s remarks have sparked political debate, with his allies accusing Cooper of being “soft on crime,” while Cooper’s campaign has denied these allegations, emphasizing his efforts to prosecute violent criminals during his tenure.

The incident has also led to legislative action in North Carolina. Lawmakers have passed a bill named “Iryna’s Law,” which aims to tighten pretrial release rules and potentially revive executions in the state. The legislation seeks to prevent the release of individuals with violent criminal histories before trial, addressing concerns raised by Zarutska’s death. The bill has bipartisan support in the House and is awaiting review by Governor Josh Stein.
