Trump third term

Donald Trump announced on Monday that he would not seek the vice-presidency in the 2028 U.S. election—an idea some of his allies have floated as a way to circumvent the two-term limit for the presidency. He said he “would be allowed” to run for VP, but insisted he wouldn’t, calling it “too cute” and suggesting that the public wouldn’t accept it.

Despite ruling out the VP role, Trump left open the possibility of seeking a third presidential term, even though the Twenty‑Second Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits anyone from being elected president more than twice. When asked if he ruled out a third term, he responded evasively: “Am I not ruling it out? I mean you’ll have to tell me.”

He also praised key GOP figures—JD Vance and Marco Rubio—as strong potential presidential candidates, saying that if they “ever formed a group, it’d be unstoppable.”

Trump made these comments aboard Air Force One while travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo on a diplomatic trip to Asia, which includes trade-summit engagements.

Key take-aways:

  • Trump is explicitly saying no to a vice-presidential run in 2028, yet remains ambiguous about aiming for a third term.

  • The suggestion of him running for VP was seen by some as a legal workaround to remain in power, but Trump himself dismissed it.

  • Constitutional scholars argue that not only does the presidency term-limit apply, but the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution also prohibits someone constitutionally ineligible for the presidency from being vice-president.

  • His comments keep open speculative dynamics within the Republican Party over leadership and succession for 2028 and beyond.
