Trump to designate antifa a 'major terrorist organization'

President Donald Trump has declared that he will designate Antifa—a loosely organized movement of far‑left anti‑fascist activists—as a “major terrorist organization.” He made the announcement on his social media platform during a state visit to the UK. He described Antifa as “sick, dangerous, radical left disaster” and also said he will “strongly recommend” investigations into those who fund the movement under “the highest legal standards.” 

Critics have raised questions about how this would work in practice. Antifa is not a centralized group—it lacks formal leadership, membership rolls, or unified structure. Because of this, it is unclear under existing U.S. law how Antifa could be legally designated as a domestic terrorist organization. Some observers say doing so would raise serious First Amendment and constitutional concerns. 

The announcement follows closely on the heels of the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah. Trump and his administration have connected this move to their broader narrative about rising political violence from “radical leftist” actors.
