Former President Donald Trump announced Friday that he has ordered two U.S. nuclear submarines to be deployed to strategic locations in response to a warning from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who reminded the United States of Russia’s nuclear strike capability.

In a post on his social media platform, Trump cited what he called “highly provocative statements” from Medvedev, now serving as Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council. “I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump wrote. He added, “Words are very important and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

The U.S. Navy and Pentagon have not yet responded to Trump’s announcement.

Trump’s move comes amid escalating rhetoric between Washington and Moscow. Earlier this week, Trump criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for continuing military strikes in Ukraine and said he was cutting the timeline for a peace deal from 50 days to just 10 to 12 days. He also threatened steep tariffs on Russia if a ceasefire isn’t reached.

Medvedev responded sharply in a rare social media post, accusing Trump of issuing ultimatums. “He should remember two things: 1. Russia is not Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step toward war—not with Ukraine, but with his own country,” Medvedev warned. “Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road.”
