Ramirez shared on social media that she participated in the second Panamerican Congress in Mexico City, a gathering of progressive lawmakers from across the Americas.
In her speech, Rep. Ramirez highlighted her cultural roots, saying, “I’m a proud Guatemalan before I’m an American.”
The Department of Homeland Security responded by referencing a quote from former President Theodore Roosevelt: “There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism… Our allegiance must be purely to the United States.”
In reaction to Ramirez’s statement, Republican Rep. Andy Ogles called for her to be stripped of her citizenship, deported, and removed from the House Homeland Security Committee.
