A 21-year-old North Carolina man identified by authorities as the person who breached the perimeter of Mar-a-Lago early Sunday morning was described by family members as quiet, apolitical and uncomfortable around firearms — a characterization that contrasts sharply with the circumstances officials say led to his death.

Authorities said Austin Tucker Martin entered the inner security zone of former President Donald Trump’s Palm Beach resort around 1:30 a.m. carrying a shotgun and a gas canister. Security personnel confronted him, and he was shot and killed during the encounter. Trump was in Washington, D.C., at the time of the incident.

Martin’s cousin, Braeden Fields, told local media that the young man had never shown any serious interest in guns or politics. Fields described him as reserved and said he lacked experience handling firearms. Despite growing up around hunting — Fields said he himself is an avid hunter — Martin avoided using guns and disliked the noise. According to his cousin, even when given opportunities to try shooting, he refused and had only ever handled a BB gun.

Although Martin had an older brother serving in the military, Fields said Martin’s own interests were far removed from weapons or political activism. He worked at a golf course preparing it for the season and had a fondness for the sport. Family members said he enjoyed spending time around golf courses and even created watercolor and ink artwork inspired by them. A website registered in his name features illustrations of golf landscapes and describes a mission centered on capturing the hopeful feeling of being out on the course.

Fields said the family had no warning signs that Martin would travel roughly 700 miles to Florida or become involved in any kind of confrontation. In fact, he emphasized that their family strongly supports Trump and that Martin himself avoided political discussions altogether.

According to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, a relative reported Martin missing at approximately 1:38 a.m. on February 22, 2026 — nearly the same time authorities in Florida say the security breach occurred. After the missing persons report was filed, Martin’s information was entered into a national database. Federal authorities later informed the family that they were conducting an active investigation in Florida involving him, and the missing persons case was transferred to federal investigators.

Florida law enforcement said Mar-a-Lago security personnel detected an individual inside the protected grounds and confronted him when they observed he was carrying a shotgun and a gas can. Officials have not publicly detailed what may have prompted Martin’s actions.

Fields said Martin’s mother has been devastated by the news and that the family has struggled to process what happened. He expressed frustration over negative commentary circulating online, saying that those who truly knew Martin would have seen him as a gentle and kind person.

“He’s a good kid,” Fields said, adding that the situation has left the family shocked and searching for answers.
