24 Aug: The God Who Provides
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. . . . Will he not much more clothe you? Matthew 6:28, 30

We followed the trail deeper into the forest, leaving the village in China’s Yunnan Province farther behind us with every step. About an hour into the hike, the thunder of rushing water reached our ears. We picked up our pace and soon stepped into a clearing. Before us, a wide sheet of white water poured over gray rocks. The view was breathtaking.
Our hiking companions, who lived in the village, suggested having a picnic. It sounded wonderful—except we hadn’t brought any food. Without hesitation, they disappeared among the trees. Before long, they returned carrying a variety of fruits and vegetables, along with some fish. One of the plants, called shuixiangcai, had tiny purple flowers and looked unusual, but it tasted delicious.
That unexpected meal reminded me of how generously God provides through His creation. The abundance around us reflects His care. Scripture tells us that the earth produced all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit (Genesis 1:12). God also said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed . . . and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food” (verse 29).
There may be times when trusting God to provide feels difficult. When that happens, spend a little time outdoors and notice the life growing around you. Let it remind you of Jesus’ words: “ Do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ . . . Your heavenly Father knows that you need [all these things]” (Matthew 6:31–32).
The God who fills forests with food and causes fruit to grow knows exactly what you need. His provision may not always come in the way you expect, but His care is never absent.
