21 Jul: Beyond the Checklist

Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven. Matthew 5:12

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:3–10

Years ago, I applied for a role in a Christian organization and was handed a long list of rules about alcohol, tobacco, and certain kinds of entertainment. The explanation was simple: “We expect Christian behavior from our employees.” I didn’t struggle with the list because those weren’t habits I had anyway. But part of me wondered why the list didn’t mention things like arrogance, insensitivity, harshness, spiritual apathy, or a critical spirit. None of those attitudes were addressed, even though they can do just as much harm.

Walking with Jesus isn’t measured by a checklist. It’s a way of living that can’t be reduced to regulations. It has a quiet, steady beauty that shows up in a person’s character.

Jesus captures that beauty in the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3–10. Those who depend on His Spirit become humble and willing to take the lower place. They feel the weight of other people’s pain. They respond gently. They hunger for what is good—both in their own hearts and in the world around them. They show mercy to those who fall short. Their devotion to Jesus is sincere and undivided. They work for peace and leave peace behind wherever they go. They treat those who mistreat them with kindness, offering good where evil was given. And Jesus calls them blessed—a word that speaks of deep, steady joy.

This kind of life stands out. It draws attention not because it is loud, but because it reflects Jesus Himself. And it belongs to anyone who comes to Him and asks for it.
