Day 1
Scriptures: John 10:10, John 16:33
Feels Like The World’s Turned Upside Down
Do you ever find yourself looking around and thinking, “What is going on with the world?”? Maybe you read some negative comments on social media and wonder how people can be so mean. Perhaps you watch some crazy documentary about a terrible crime and try to fathom how someone could do such things to another person. Maybe you’re hearing people claim that ‘up’ means ‘down’ and ‘left’ means ‘right,’ and you’ve never felt more confused. It seems like the world is totally losing its mind.
The truth is God created the world and made all things good, but when man sinned for the very first time, the perfect world God intended for us became a broken one full of sin. Jesus tells us that while we’re here in the world, we will have trouble. We’ll go through pain. We’ll have a target on our backs. John 10:10 says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy,” but here comes the good news: HE has already overcome it all.
We’ll never have all the answers – the world gets more confusing every day – but one thing is clear. One thing remains true. Jesus is the answer. He is the only one who can shine his light on our dark world. He has overcome, so we wouldn’t have to.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Jesus, today will you shine Your light on our lives? Shine Your light on our families, our work, our schools, our government. We don’t need all the answers. We just need you. Thank you for Your truth we can look to. Thank You for the hope we find in You.
Day 2
Scriptures: John 14:6, Proverbs 3:5-6
EVERYBODY’S FINDING THEIR TRUTH
“My truth.” That’s the phrase these days. What that really means is “My feelings.” It’s ok to feel your feelings, but when what we feel becomes “our truth,” we are inviting chaos into our lives. Without the foundation of truth, we’re like astronauts floating around in space without gravity; one bump could send us floating away for miles. Truth gives us something to stand on, something to ground ourselves to.
So, what is the truth?
One of the boldest things ever said by a human was said by Jesus:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life.No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)
That’s bold, and here is where we come to a crossroads. At a certain point, you have to make a decision: are you going to trust Jesus’ truth, the culture’s truth, or “your truth”? You’ve already tried your feelings. How is that working for you? You can look at our messed-up culture and see all the mentally and emotionally unhealthy people and know that’s not working either. So, what do you have to lose?
To know the truth is to know Jesus, and to trust the truth is to trust Jesus.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Jesus, help me know Your truth by spending time with You in Your Word. Speak to me. Teach me. Then, help me to trust You even when it doesn’t make sense, even when it challenges me, even when it’s unpopular. Help me to know and trust. Amen.
Day 3
Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
WE ALL NEED HELP, INCLUDING MYSELF
Sometimes life can be hard. Let’s just be honest. Yes, there are beautiful parts, but a lot of life can feel ugly too. If you feel that way, the good news is that you’re not alone. We ALL experience the messy parts of life. It’s okay to not be okay. It’s what you do next that changes everything. Will you sit in your emotions and bottle them up, waiting for them to one day erupt like a volcano? Or will you open yourself up and reach out to someone to seek help? We get to experience the beautiful parts of life when we learn how to properly navigate the messy parts.
Here are a couple of steps to help you do that:
Step One: Identify what you need help with and talk to someone about it.
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
Life was never meant to be lived alone. As human beings, we are wired to thrive off emotional connection. Science has even proven that the more you open yourself up to others, the more resilient you become. The quicker you can bounce back when you experience the messy parts of life, the sooner you can get back to the beautiful parts of it.
Step Two: Talk to the RIGHT person about it.
Identify a person in your life who lifts you up and encourages you. The kind of person that isn’t afraid to shoot you straight. The kind of person that loves you and wants to see you absolutely killing it at life. Seek out that safe space to be vulnerable. Maybe it’s a family member. Maybe it’s a friend. Maybe it’s a counselor. These people aren’t unicorns. They exist. If you find yourself needing someone like that in your life, we’ve cracked the code on where to find them. No gatekeeping here. Get yourself to your local church. There you will find people who struggle and deal with things like you do. You’ll discover imperfect people coming together for a higher purpose. You’ll find people who lift each other up when they’re down and show each other some tough love when needed.
God, help me to discern and identify people that can be a safe space for when life gets messy. Help me navigate those messy parts of my life so I can heal and experience the beautiful parts of life in You. Amen.
